Pet Ophthalmology
Anyone who has ever stared into the eyes of a pet knows just how expressive and communicative they can be. How many extra treats, ball tosses, or chin rubs have been won thanks to a wide-eyed look? Preserving these powerful weapons of persuasion requires regular veterinary checkups and an eye for detail, especially as pets become older.
Certain breeds of cats and dogs are more prone to developing eye disorders. In some cases – as with brachycephalic breeds like Himalayans, Persians, bulldogs, pugs, and boxers – it's a matter of anatomy. In other cases, such as with Siberian huskies, beagles, and Jack Russell terriers, it's a hereditary predisposition toward certain diseases, such as cataracts and glaucoma, that's a concern.
At Solomon Veterinary Clinic, our veterinarians are experienced in treating a wide variety of pet eye disorders. These range from infections, corneal ulcers, cherry eye, glaucoma and tumors. When you bring your pet in for a wellness appointment, we will conduct a thorough exam to ensure that his or her eyes are healthy.
Should your pet begin to show symptoms of eye trouble, please be sure to contact us right away. These include:
  • Squinting or avoidance of light
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Unusual discharge
  • Repeated rubbing of the eye
  • Irregular pupils
Depending upon your pet's condition, immediate treatment could be the key to preserving his or her vision.
